2009-2010 Season Highlights
This season was a monumental, record-setting year for MAC, as both the men’s
and women’s teams capped their campaigns with wins at the USRowing Youth
National Championships, the second and third national titles to MAC’s credit.
- The Men’s Lightweight 8, silver medalists at Regionals, executed a breathtaking attack
in the second 1,000m of the final at Nationals on Harsha Lake in Cincinnati to snatch the
gold away from defending champion Newport and pre-race favorite Marin. This was the
first Nationals medal of any kind for MAC in an eight.
- The Women’s Varsity 4, also silver medalists at Regionals, dominated the National
Championships from start to finish on their way to the first national gold medal ever for
the MAC women’s team. In the process, they set an all-time course speed record for the
event while winning every race by an average of 8 seconds over their closest competitor.
- Maureen O’Hanlon, the Regional Champion in the single and rowing in both the four
and the single at Nationals, brought home two medals from Ohio, adding a bronze in the
single to her gold medal from the four.
- At Regionals, MAC came away with five medals: the above-mentioned gold in
the women’s single and silver in the women’s four and men’s lightweight eight, and
added two more silvers, in the men’s lightweight four and women’s 3rd novice 8.
- The women’s team set the tone for their performance in the four during the fall, when
they won the Head of the Charles, Head of the American and Head of the Lake.
Head of the Charles
MAC joined the select list of clubs to have added a Head of the Charles gold medal to their collection, winning the Women's Youth Four event at the world's most famous regatta on October 18th, 2009 in Boston, MA. The crew of Maureen O'Hanlon, Chelsea Shannon, Meghan Costopoulos, Grace Riccardi and cox'n Shannon Sullivan passed five boats on the winding three mile course in the midst of a driving rainstorm to record MAC's first ever win at the event.
2008-2009 Season Highlights
MAC had a tremendously successful season in 2008-2009, with all four squads combining to log a host of all-time team bests and historic firsts. Among the many highlights:
- Quinn Harper won the bronze medal at the USRowing Youth National Championships on Harsha Lake in Cincinnati. The performance represented the third consecutive year that a MAC crew has brought a medal home from Ohio.
- The MAC Women’s Varsity Quad took gold at the Southwest Championships in Sacramento and then went on to finish 7th at Nationals, winning the Petite Final. The win in Sacramento was the second in four years and the fifth consecutive medal for the MAC women in that event.
- All told, MAC won a team record 9 medals in a team record 13 finals at Southwest Champs. Also noteworthy, the women’s team was one of only three programs to place their V8, JV8, 3V8 and N8 in the finals.
- The MAC women’s team won the SoCal Challenge Cup for the first time in team history, sweeping the team points titles at both of the Cal Cup Regattas. The men’s team finished second in the SoCal Cup standings, behind Newport Aquatic Center.
- At the San Diego Crew Classic, the women’s squad put both the V8 and JV8 in the finals for the second consecutive year and finished fourth in both events.
